After a mad rush and no sleep, we made it to Newark Airport just in time to be the required 1 hour early. (As you may know, we are putting our house on the market while we are away, so there was a lot of cleaning, organizing and hiding of our stuff that was done in the middle of the night.)
Nate and I lost Dan for a few minutes after check-in and reconnected at the security checkpoint. I realized it wasn't the best idea for him to have all the tickets and my cell phone. Lesson one learned.
Once we settled into our seats, we learned that our flight was delayed an hour due to bad weather conditions. We watched out the window as very dark, menacing clouds headed our way. "Hmmmmm. This doesn't look good." After our original flight time came and went the loudspeaker announced our flight had been canceled. What now? This sent all the passengers scurrying in all directions toward Help Desks and massive lines formed before overly tired Airport personnel. Lesson 2, bring a portable seat. We stood in line for 3 hours, and we were comparatively close to the front of the line. Walking up to the podium was like receiving an award for "Bravery Under Duress" and "Ability To Keep It Together Despite Overwhelming Fatigue". Others cheered each time the line moved forward a few feet. We were awarded tickets for the following day and several meal vouchers. Now to find a hotel. All those people in line must have been contacting every inn, motel and hotel in the area, because every room was booked. Lesson 3, find out what the seasoned travelers are doing and follow their lead. You know who they are because their luggage is streamlined, their walk is determined and their gaze is always on their targeted destination while talking on their blue tooth.
